Metal Roof Plumber
Also known as: Roof Plumbers, Steel Roofers.
Roof plumbers’ work involves a lot of bending, climbing and lifting. They work outdoors in all weather conditions. Particular care has to be taken in wet weather and in preventing sunburn (skin damage).
A roof plumber’s scope of work covers:
- Handling structures with metal, polycarbonate, fibreglass, glass, malthoid sheets, and waterproof membranes.
- Installing roof mesh, insulation, gutters and downpipes, as well as roof safety systems and walkways.
- Connecting roof discharge to rainwater collection systems.
- Installing rainwater tanks and detention devices.
- Terminating rainwater drainage to street kerb or authorities’ stormwater drainage network.

To be a Roof Plumber you need to enjoy outdoor, practical work and have steady hands. You also need to be able to work at heights and be able to bend, climb and lift. Roof Plumbers work in all weather conditions.
Typical Duties
- prepare and/or study drawings and specifications to work out installation requirements and materials,
- erect scaffolding and use elevated work platforms,
- correctly space and fasten battens or top hats across the roof rafters/purlins on which the roof sheeting will be fixed to,
- Install safety mesh, insulation, roof sheeting, equipment pumps, and water tanks,
- design, fabricate and install flashings,
- assess risks and test work as required by local authority regulations or work specification,
- maintain and repair roofing and roof plumbing systems, and
- clear the roof of debris when the job is finished.
All construction workers need a White Card and Asbestos Awareness Training to work on a construction site in the ACT.
