Drainlayer
Drainlayer or Drainer, Apprenticeship.
Drainlayers or Drainers install, maintain and design below-ground drainage systems and associated sewerage or effluent disposal systems. Drainlayers work outdoors with other tradespeople on building and construction sites. They often start (and finish) early and may be required to travel between locations.

To be a Drainlayer you need to enjoy outdoor, practical work, be physically fit, and have good hand-eye coordination. You also need to have a technical aptitude and be able to follow plans. Drainlayers work in all weather conditions.
Typical Duties
- set out and install below-ground sanitary and stormwater drainage systems, including septic tanks, effluent disposal and disinfection systems,
- carry out site drainage and de-watering procedures, employing stormwater, sub-soil and pumped systems,
- find and clear blockages in drainage systems, and replace sections of below-ground drains,
- excavate and level according to line, depth and grade,
- install excavation supports in accordance with Occupational Health and Safety requirements,
- cut and join piping, construct brick or concrete pits,
- test drainage systems.
All construction workers need a White Card and Asbestos Awareness Training to work on a construction site in the ACT.
Check with your RTO to see if you are eligible for an ACT Training Fund Authority Subsidy. This will reduce the cost of your training. Training will also vary from RTO to RTO.
